Glendale Cemetery October 2009
Glendale Cemetery is Akron’s oldest cemetery, dating back to 1839. It is entered as a historic landscape by the National Register of Historic Places. The picturesque landscape, monuments and burial sites tell the diverse history of "The Rubber City". Historic Glendale Cemetery was charted in 1839. It was registered in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 for the Historic Landscape and bear the tag line of “The Guardian of Akron’s Heritage Since 1839.” Within the cemetery, the story of Akron unfolds. Past citizens of Akron’s are all buried here from the prominent figures to all social, ethnic, and economic groups. Located right outside of Downtown Akron, the cemetery was originally located in a rural setting. However, the city has grown around it. The preservation of the cemetery is a continuing effort.

Civil War Memorial
Chapel 1876 - Located
through the front gates into Akron's historic Glendale Cemetery, on the
left of the entrance road is the Civil War Memorial Chapel. The
old-world gothic style of the building shows it's Victorian heritage.
Over the front entrance is a stone banner proclaiming, "All Honor To Our
Nation's Defenders."

Seiberling, Franklin Augustus
b. 1859 d. 1955 - He
founded Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in 1898 and The Seiberling
Rubber Co. later on. Plot: Sec.

Barber, Ohio Columbus
b. 1841 d. 1920 - First
worked in his father's Akron, Ohio Match Company. He was such a
successful salesman that he later founded Barberton, Ohio and moved the
family business there, where he built a lavish mansion. The house is
gone today but the gothic-style horse stables still stand. O.C.
would become known as "the Match King of America".
